Red Macaw / Lapa Roja / Ola

The feathers of this species are collected during molting season and used for sacred Maleku ceremonies.  The nests are located at the tops of the tallest trees, thereby making the collection process very dangerous.  This is a sacred bird which is considered to be "untouchable".

The Drum / El Tambor (in Spanish) / Tali (in Maleku)

Long ago, the drum was used as a method of communication from one location to another between members of the tribe.  It is carved in relief from balsa wood and painted with acrylics.  The top of the drum is made from genuine iguana skin.
