Ceremonial Drum 4

Dimensions:    9.5 inches in diameter, 30 inches tall

Drum / El Tambor / Tali

Long ago, the drum was used as a method of communication from one location to another.  The body of the drum is made of hand-carved balsa wood, and the top of the drum is made of iguana skin.

Skin of the Iguana / Piel de Iguana / Erra Lenh

While the Malekus value the iguana as food and as material for artistry, they are very careful so as to allow the population to thrive.

Artistic features:

There are two warriors featured in this hand-carved drum.  One is a chief, as indicated by the colored cactus leaves shown in his headdress.  Both are in an aggressive, protective mood, prepared to combat elements that would destroy the natural resources of the forest.

Coral Snake / _______ / ______
Represents the medicinal powers of the Shaman.  With the snake totally wrapped around the heads of both warriors, this indicates a dangerous, threatening situation.

Toucan / Tucán / Pili

In addition to being colorful, the toucan is a very romantic bird.  To the Maleku, it represents the soothing power of Woman over the natural, aggressive protectiveness of Man.

In artwork, a toucan which is looking upward is representing a peaceful, happy time.  It is looking toward God.  In the case of this mask, the toucan which is looking downward is reflecting a dangerous, chaotic situation.

Blue Morpho / Mariposa Azul / Fufu

The Blue Morpho is the national butterfly of Costa Rica.  Its gorgeous blue wings flutter gracefully through fields and forests throughout the country.  For the Malekus, the bright blue of the Morpho represents the color of love.  In this mask, the morpho explains the motivation of the warriors... love of the natural resources of the forest.
