Jicara 1 - Half painted in acrylics

This piece features:

Black Peacock / Pavón / Tufi

Designated by God as a protector of the Maleku hunter.

Toucan / Tucán / Pili

In addition to being colorful, the toucan is a very romantic bird.  To the Maleku, it represents the soothing power of Woman over the natural, aggressive protectiveness of Man.

In artwork, a toucan which is looking upward is representing a peaceful, happy time.  It is looking toward God.  In contrast, a toucan which is looking downward is reflecting a dangerous, chaotic situation.

Anteater / Oso Hormiguero / Oron

These products are made from the jicara fruit.  When the fruit has developed over a three-month period, it is harvested and carved before the shell becomes too hard.  The fruit is picked, cut in half or cored, as in the case of making jugs, and emptied of seeds and pulp.  The surface is smoothed and then painted in acrylics.

The pupa can be used as a cup or a bowl, and the designs serve as reminders of the natural surroundings on the Maleku reservation.

Because every piece of art shown on this web site is made to order, we do not stock inventory.  Please send an e-mail describing which pieces you would like, and they will be custom made and shipped directly to you.
