Jicara 4 - Half painted in acrylics

                                    This piece features:

These products are made from the jicara fruit.  When the fruit has developed over a three-month period, it is harvested and carved before the shell becomes too hard.  The fruit is picked, cut in half or cored, as in the case of making jugs, and emptied of seeds and pulp.  The natural shine of the surface is scraped off, and then the entire surface is painted black and the carving process begins.

The pupa can be used as a cup or a bowl, and the designs serve as reminders of the natural surroundings.

The inscription "Capi Capi" (also spelled "Kapi Kapi") means "a gracious hello" in Maleku.
