Jicara / Pupa

Each picture is a link to a larger photo with descriptions of the artistic details.

These products are made from the jicara fruit.  When the fruit has developed over a three-month period, it is harvested and carved before the shell becomes too hard.  The fruit is picked, cut in half or cored, as in the case of making jugs, and emptied of seeds and pulp.  The natural shine of the surface is scraped off, and then the entire surface is painted black and the carving process begins.

The pupa can be used as a cup or a bowl, and the designs serve as reminders of the tropical surroundings on the Maleku reservation.

Because every piece of art is made to order, we do not stock inventory.  Please send an e-mail describing which pieces you would like, and they will be custom made and shipped directly to you.
