In all of David's work, butterflies represent the Blue Morpho... the national butterfly of Costa Rica.  Its blue hue symbolizes love.

To the artist, the true-life colors of the Ancoc represent the forest (green), the potential destruction of Nature (red) which serves as a warning to mankind to treat Nature with respect, and purity (white).

The colorful toucan represents the tranquilizing power of Woman over the natural, protective aggression of Man.
