Jicara Jugs

These pictures show the two sides of the same jicara jug.

Each jicara gourd is dried, cored, smoothed, and painted in acrylics.  A stopper is carved from the bamboo tree.

This carry string is made from the bark of the "Burio" tree also known as "Porelen" in Maleku.  The process involves cutting the bark from the tree.  (Over time, the bark will re-grow.)  The bark is soaked in water for four days at which an inner fiber called "Kirrilenh" can be removed from the bark.  The fiber is then squeezed, flattened, and dried in the sun for two to three days.  Two individual strands are formed and then twisted together to form a single thread.  The carry string is formed by looping this single thread by hand.  No tools of any kind are used.

Black Peacock / Pavón / Tufi

Blue Morpho / Mariposa Azul / Fufu

(In Maleku, "marama" indicates more than one of something.  In this case, there are two morphos on the larger rain stick.)

The Blue Morpho is the national butterfly of Costa Rica.  Its gorgeous blue wings flutter gracefully through fields and forests throughout the country.  For the Malekus, the bright blue of the Morpho represents the color of love.

Toucan / Tucán / Pili

In addition to being colorful, the toucan is a very romantic bird.  To the Maleku, it represents the soothing power of Woman over the natural, aggressive protectiveness of Man.

In artwork, a toucan which is looking upward is representing a peaceful, happy time.  It is looking toward God.  In contrast, a toucan which is looking downward is reflecting a dangerous, chaotic situation.
