Rain stick / Bambú de Lluvia (Spanish)  / Arafuju Ti Lajarinhanhe (Maleku)

This rainstick is 41" tall.  It is
decorated on both sides in
acrylics with the designs that
are displayed below.

The pleasing sound of the rain stick is known to be beneficial for calming one's nerves and relieving tension.

Each stick made from a length of bamboo which has been left to dry for a minimum of thirty days.  This drying process permits the seeds and pulp to loosen for easier removal.  The artist punctures tiny holes throughout the length of the stick and inserts tiny twigs into the holes.  The bottom of the stick is a natural formation of the bamboo plant that appears at intervals throughout the length of the tree.  Into the cavity, tiny pebbles and hard platanilla (similar to Heliconia) seeds are poured.  A cap of bamboo is placed on the top end, and the sides of the stick are smoothed to an even surface.   Then the acrylic painting begins.

Blue Morpho Butterflies / Mariposas Azúles / Fufu Marama

(In Maleku, "marama" indicates more than one of something.  In this case, there are two morphos on the rain stick.)

The Blue Morpho is the national butterfly of Costa Rica.  Its gorgeous blue wings flutter gracefully through fields and forests throughout the country.  For the Malekus, the bright blue of the Morpho represents the color of love.

"Jumping Bird" / Pajaro Saltarin (Spanish) / Piluctuc (Maleku)

The name of this bird refers to its particular  inclination to jump from branch to branch or from tree to tree... a beautiful and colorful sight.  This is also a wetlands bird.

Toucan / Tucán (Spanish) / Pili (Maleku)

As in all of David's work, the toucan represents the stabilizing and soothing nature of Woman over the protective aggressiveness of Man.  When a toucan is looking upward, it is interpreted as giving thanks to the God of Nature for the preservation of its home.

Anteater /
Oso Hormiguero (Spanish) /
Orón (Maleku)
:

Maintains the balance of the ant and termite population.  Represents balance in Nature.  Malekus view the Orón as a creature which cares for the soil and prevents over-population.

Trogon (Spanish) / Ancoc (Maleku)

To the artist, the green of the Ancoc represents the forest, and the red represents potential destruction of Nature which serves as a warning to mankind to treat the environment with respect.
