Rain stick / Bambú de Lluvia (Spanish) / Arafuju Ti Lajarinhanhe (Maleku)
This
rainstick is 41" tall. It is The
pleasing sound of the rain stick is known to be beneficial for calming one's
nerves and relieving tension.
(In Maleku, "marama" indicates more than one of something. In this case, there are two morphos on the rain stick.) The Blue Morpho is the national butterfly of Costa Rica. Its gorgeous blue wings flutter gracefully through fields and forests throughout the country. For the Malekus, the bright blue of the Morpho represents the color of love.
"Jumping Bird" / Pajaro Saltarin (Spanish) / Piluctuc (Maleku) The name of this bird refers to its particular inclination to jump from branch to branch or from tree to tree... a beautiful and colorful sight. This is also a wetlands bird.
Toucan / Tucán (Spanish) / Pili (Maleku) As in all of David's work, the toucan represents the stabilizing and soothing nature of Woman over the protective aggressiveness of Man. When a toucan is looking upward, it is interpreted as giving thanks to the God of Nature for the preservation of its home.
Anteater / Maintains the balance of the ant and termite population. Represents balance in Nature. Malekus view the Orón as a creature which cares for the soil and prevents over-population.
Trogon (Spanish) / Ancoc (Maleku) To the artist, the green of the Ancoc represents the forest, and the red represents potential destruction of Nature which serves as a warning to mankind to treat the environment with respect.
