Rain Stick / Bambú de Lluvia / Arafuju Ti Lajarinhanhe
The pleasing sound of the rain stick is known to be beneficial for calming one's nerves and relieving tension. The stick is made from a length of bamboo which has been left to dry for a minimum of thirty days. This drying process permits the seeds and pulp to loosen for easier removal. The artisan punctures tiny holes throughout the length of the stick and inserts tiny twigs into the holes. The bottom of the stick is a natural formation of the bamboo plant. Into the cavity, tiny pebbles and hard platanilla (similar to Heliconia) seeds are poured. A cap of bamboo is placed on the top end, and the sides of the stick are smoothed to an even surface. Designs are then painted in acrylic. The only tool that is used is a knife. This particular rain stick measures 41 inches tall, 3-1/2 inches in diameter.
