Blue Morphos / Mariposa Azúles / Fufu Marama

(In Maleku, "marama" indicates more than one of something.  In this case, there are two morphos on the larger rain stick.)

The Blue Morpho is the national butterfly of Costa Rica.  Its gorgeous blue wings flutter gracefully through fields and forests throughout the country.  For the Malekus, the bright blue of the Morpho represents the color of love.

Red Macaw / Lapa Roja / Ola

Red Macaw / Lapa Roja / Ola

The feathers of this species are collected during molting season and used for sacred Maleku ceremonies.  The nests are located at the tops of the tallest trees, thereby making the collection process very dangerous.  This is a sacred bird which is considered to be "untouchable".  Its use in artwork represents the holy, sacred aspects of Nature.

Red Macaw / Lapa Roja / Ola

Toucan / Tucán / Pili

In addition to being colorful, the toucan is a very romantic bird.  To the Maleku, it represents the soothing power of Woman over the natural, aggressive protectiveness of Man.

In artwork, a toucan which is looking upward is representing a peaceful, happy time.  It is looking toward God.  In contrast, a toucan which is looking downward is reflecting a dangerous, chaotic situation.

Red Macaw / Lapa Roja / Ola

Chorcha / Pintot

This bird is known for its melodic voice and its lovely colors... yellow, black, blue, white, and red.  It is a beautiful and popular bird.

Anteater / Hormiguero / Orón

Because the anteater controls the ant and termite populations, it is a symbol of balance in Nature.
